What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a talking therapy that has been tested rigorously and scientifically over many years and has been proven to be highly effective for a range of emotional and mental health problems.

Our secure online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works by helping you gain a better understanding about how your thoughts (cognitions) and actions (behaviours) are interconnecting with your feelings (emotions) and physical sensations to sustain the difficulties you are facing with your emotional and mental health.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Therapy

Placeholder

What if I don’t like my therapist or I don’t feel like I have the right fit with my therapist – can I change?

Without doubt, a strong therapeutic relationship is very important and all therapists work very hard to establish this with their clients. However, sometimes, for various reasons, you may feel it necessary to change your therapist. Firstly, we would encourage you to talk through any issues that you may have in the therapeutic relationship with your therapist – they are all professional, there to work collaboratively with you and will openly discuss and try to resolve any issues you may have. If, for whatever reason, these issues cannot be resolved, we are happy to consider a change of therapist; however, this is dependent on the availability of an alternative therapist and may also impact upon the ‘flow’ of your therapy.

How are the therapists ‘verified’ or ‘regulated’?

All ThinkingThrough Cognitive Behaviour Psychotherapists are fully trained, qualified and UK accredited. Each therapist maintains their accreditation with the British Association of Behaviour and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP). The BABCP is the professional body that ensures public protection through prescribing minimum standards of clinical practice, clinical supervision and continued professional development to all accredited therapists. The BABCP also set-out a ‘Standard of Conduct, Performance and Ethics’ that all members have a professional duty to adhere to.

The BABCP hold a public register of their members and accredited status. Please visit the ‘Online CBT Register’ where you are able to check the status of your therapist.

Is online therapy as good as face-to-face therapy?

Meeting with your therapist online is just a different method of meeting with them face-to-face. Research has shown the effectiveness of CBT delivered online is the same as when delivered in a therapy room. There are also advantages to having CBT online: you get to choose where to have your sessions and there’s no unnecessary travelling involved.

What happens if the technology lets me or the therapist down?

Before you meet any of our therapists online, you will have had the opportunity to test both your equipment and your internet connection speed. If you feel that one or both are insufficient then we advise against making a therapy appointment.

Once a therapeutic journey is underway, technology issues that prevent a session from starting or continuing will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Should the technical issues lie with your therapist, we will happily reschedule that session without further charge. Rest assured, however, that technical problems are infrequent and are often resolved quickly.

I am midway through my treatment and not getting any better. What do I do?

Throughout all therapeutic treatment, progress is reviewed at every session with your therapist. Should you have any questions about your progress, please raise these directly with your therapist.

Is my therapist likely to talk to anyone about me?

All therapeutic relationships are bound by confidentiality. In short, this means that your therapist will not talk about you or share any details about you without your prior, explicit agreement. However, as mental health professionals, each therapist is legally and morally required to ensure the safety of any individual first and foremost. This does mean that if they are significantly concerned about you or somebody else’s safety and/or wellbeing, they may need to breach this confidence and report their concerns to the relevant authority. All therapists would endeavour to resolve safety or wellbeing concerns without doing so, encourage clients to contact any necessary authorities themselves or make explicit their intention to contact authorities with or without your consent.

All therapists will discuss their therapeutic work with their clinical supervisors. These meetings are highly professional and bound by the same confidentiality guidance. All client details and identifiable information is anonymised throughout these discussions.

Can I be joined by my parent/partner/friend during sessions?

In most cases, it is not appropriate to have third parties joining sessions. However, it can sometimes be an essential part of therapeutic work. This issue should be discussed with your therapist who will advise you.

How can I communicate with my therapist outside of sessions?

It is important to note that ThinkingThrough…Therapy is NOT suitable for crisis or urgent situations. We have provided clear instructions on who you should contact in these circumstances.

It is unlikely that there will be any need for you to contact your therapist directly between sessions. Should this be necessary, the details will be discussed by your therapist.

If you need to cancel or amend a pre-existing booking, details will be provided about how to do this.

What is your security policy?

Security and privacy are of utmost importance to us and our internal policies and procedures reflect that. For more details about how we keep your information secure, please read our Privacy Policy.

How much does it cost?

ThinkingThrough therapy sessions are priced at £85 and last for around 50 minutes with your allocated therapist.

We can prepare assessment or specialist reports to suit your requirements. An assessment report would normally cost £150; however, we usually quote for reports on a case-by-case basis. Please talk to your therapist if you need a report writing.

Is a deposit required?

No deposit is needed, we just ask that you ensure you book and pay for your session no later than 48 hours before you meet with your therapist.

When do I have to pay?

Bookings and payments should be made no later than 48 hours before your meeting with the therapist. We recommend that you book your session as soon as you can, as some time slots can be very popular. Once you have agreed your regular session with your therapist, we will hold these sessions for you until you have finalised your payment. We are unable to hold sessions beyond 48 hours prior to your meeting, so please make sure you book them out in good time.

Can I book more than one session at a time?

Yes, you can book up to 3 sessions in advance. This limit is designed to coincide with regular reviews with your therapist.

I need to cancel my appointment; can I get a refund?

It can be hard to fill a session if it’s cancelled too late. If you need to cancel an appointment, you must do so at least 48 hours before you are due to meet with your therapist. We can only offer refunds for cancellations or amendments to booked sessions if you have notified to us more than 48 hours before the scheduled session.

For circumstances beyond your control, drop us a note at appointments@thinkingthrough.com and we’ll work it out together.

Can I amend/reschedule my session?

Your session is your time to work on what you need. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of it:

  • Block off the time in your work calendar, so you can’t be booked out during your session;
  • Let people know in advance that you will be busy: this is an appointment for you to get what you need;
  • If rescheduling is unavoidable, we will make the change (we will charge in any circumstance if you let us know later than 48 hours before your session) as long as your therapist agrees and has availability. If we can’t reschedule, the session will be subject to our cancellation policy.
An urgent family or work matter has come up and I can’t make my appointment this afternoon. What happens?

Life can throw some challenges at us but in most cases, we need to adhere to our 48-hour cancellation policy. However, if the situation was very unexpected, we will consider this. Please do get in touch with us at appointments@thinkingthrough.com.

My health insurance will pay for my therapy. How does that work?

We don’t current work with health insurers but we are working on this. Please check back for updates.
