How to Improve your Mental Wellbeing

by Mar 28, 2022

It’s completely normal for all of us to have better and worse days when it comes to our mental wellbeing but there are some things we can do to look after our mental health and it’s crucial that we do.

Here are a few proven, effective ways to check in with our own mental health and ensure we have time to do the things we enjoy to relax and maintain a good mental wellbeing.

Establish a good routine

Evidence shows that getting a good balance of work, rest and play, as well as having a regular bedtime and sleep routine, can help improve mood and manage stress levels, so turn the laptop off at the end of the day!

Engage in activities you enjoy

Doing things that give us a sense of achievement, enjoyment and closeness to other people is one of the most effective ways of overcoming depression and maintaining positive mental health.

Take time to relax

Take time to relax and take care of ourselves, whether this is through formal relaxation methods, such use of mindfulness and exercises, or relaxing activities, such as reading and listening to music.

Eat well

Eating regularly and healthily plays a big role in maintaining a positive mental wellbeing alongside regulating our alcohol consumption and avoiding use of illicit drugs.

Put on your running shoes!

Studies show that when we participate in exercise and physical activity chemical changes occur in the brain, which improves our mood and releases endorphins making us feel good.

Spend time with friends, family and loved ones

This can be a good way of achieving a sense of closeness to others. It also gives us the opportunity to share experiences, talk about how we are feeling and discuss any worries.

Plan ahead

Many people find it helpful to set themselves goals and make schedules or to do lists. This can include short- medium- and long-term goals, designed to establish a sense of purpose, achievement, and things to look forward to.

Be kind to yourself

Be kind to yourself and recognise your accomplishments, however small. Reward yourself no matter the size of the task achieved! This creates a level of positive reinforcement and highlights the successful completion of your goals with a treat.
